Copy of TCOLE 2102 Crime Reduction Practitioner Course (Crime Prevention 2)

Police departments are tasked with protecting citizens and reducing crime in society. The
success of any police department relies on the cooperation between the community and the
police. This course teaches officers, supervisors, and executives successful strategies involving
stakeholders to form trusting relationships, changing the soil of the department and the
community.

This course introduces the fundamentals of the problem-solving model developed by Dr. Jerry
Ratcliffe called “PANDA,” breaking down his book “Reducing Crime,” teaching the officer
implementing the initiatives how to write and research a problem and execute that plan. This
class teaches how community engagement units may flatten the chain of command for more
buy-in from officers and the community.

The student will learn essential business communication, public speaking, social strain theory,
routine activity theory, crime displacement, crime concentration, basic security principles,
harm-focused, intelligence-led, problem-oriented, and evidence-based practices. Students will
also be certified in home and business security assessments based on targeting hardening and
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design CPTED concepts. (This is not a CPTED course)

Although this course has no final exam, it is writing intensive with daily quizzes and a final class
presentation. A laptop is needed.
