About this Event
Starting on Wednesday 11th March for six weeks.
This is the fifth year of the Sister Courage self defence course. It is a safe space to practice verbal and physical skills to build confidence in your instincts, assertiveness and awareness in the face of misogyny and gender based violence.
I have been running self defence and anti misogyny training for nine years, and have thirty years of experience in martial arts, self defence and personal safety. I have taught in all areas and different groups across the city now, gathering nine years of women's experience, which inform what I teach
Each week the workshops will offer a physical element that incorporates a little fitness with simple techniques to help confidence in the face of aggression. We will also use our voice and our physical presence to empower ourselves in a supportive environment.
What I facilitate is allowing women to explore their own instincts and ownership of their observations of behaviour. We all understand now that as much as we fear being followed by strangers, we are more likely to face verbal or physical violence from men we vaguely know, or potentially think we know.
This is working towards identify misogynistic trends in a person that will make them challenge your boundaries, or potentially believe that you don't even have the right to them.
And this is not a one size fits all. All women will have different threat awareness's, and find themselves more or less comfortable with the tactics we explore. So I present a toolbox to try out, in a supportive safe space to practice courage.
The workshops will tackle different elementsof women's safety experience such as: street safety against harassment; why women do threat assessment better; the freeze, the faun, the flight, the flop and fight.
We break down entitlement, misogyny, and toxic masculinity and explore the harmful effect on behaviour so we can shift away from the harm of a culture of victim blaming and placing responsibility firmly with the aggressor.
My job is to tell you you were right all along, that when something felt wrong, it was wrong, to invite you to fight for you, to listen to your instincts, and be the you that you can recognise
Please feel free to make contact as regards concessions, financial constraint should not be a barrier.
All ages and fitness levels accepted.
