Join us at Stoneheap Wood for an introduction to coppicing. You'll learn about sustainable woodland management and its benefits for wildlifeJoin us at Stoneheap Wood for an introduction to coppicing. We will be looking at the historical uses and the relevance of coppicing today. The best part of the day will then be spent learning how to coppice and pollard. It’s very much ‘hands on’ with use of tools, PPE and safe working practices. Finally we will tackle what to do with what you have cut, ending with a Q & A closing discussion.
10.00 - Arrival at Stoneheap Woods, Introduction to Trainers, Site Risk Assessment.
Walk to work site, tools and PPE, health and safety. Pruning Techniques.
10.30 - Divide into working pairs, coppice Hazel that is in cycle (7 years) and dead hedging
12.30 - Lunch and Q&A Discussion
1.00 - Pollard Willow and plant hardwood cuttings.
3.30 - Hot drink. Course notes. Products and Q&A discussion.
4.00 - Depart
Stoneheap Wood is a young mixed plantation woodland on the bank of the Breich near Stoneyburn in West Lothian.
Its owners, Amy and Micah, are working towards improving its amenity and biodiversity value through the use of sustainable woodland management including coppicing techniques.'
Experience Level - All levels for novice to enthusiast but particularly those involved in managing neglected woods
What to bring with you – Weather appropriate clothing, steel toe cap boots or wellies and packed lunch.
Catering – Please bring a packed lunch. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be available throughout the day.

Trainers - Micah and Amy have owned and managed Stoneheap Wood since 2011. They were inspired by Bradfield Woods in Suffolk and the writings of Oliver Rackham to buy and manage their own wood. They met as horticulture students at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in 1993. Micah specialised in arboriculture and then running environmental programmes with children and vulnerable adults. Amy specialised in landscaping, plantsmanship and then working in community gardening projects. Amy brings an interest in wild plants and their uses, historical research and crafts using natural products. Micah brings an interest in history, woodlands, green woodworking and how humans interact with nature particularly woods.

Parking - Several parking are availabe at the gate or there is a layby nearby that will take several vehicles. The layby is a few minutes walk from the gate, on the opposite side of the road heading towards Stoneyburn village.
