Cooking with Fire: Traditional Hearth Cooking Class
Step back in time and discover the art of cooking over an open fire—a skill deeply rooted in our Colonial history. Long before modern conveniences, early settlers relied on the hearth not only for warmth but as the heart of their kitchen. The fireplace served as an oven, stovetop, and even a dishwasher, making fire-building and temperature control essential skills for survival, especially in the Appalachian Mountains.
This immersive class begins with the fundamentals of fire-building and an introduction to traditional hearth cooking setups. You’ll learn how to manage coals, position skillets for optimal heat, and master the use of cast iron cookware—including proper care, maintenance, and the time-honored technique of seasoning a pan, just like Grandma did.
Once the fire is perfectly tended and the cookware is ready, the hands-on cooking experience begins. Participants will work together to prepare ingredients, build recipes, and cook over the open flame. Along the way, you’ll develop essential skills such as knife techniques, fire management, and timing multiple dishes to ensure everything comes together seamlessly.
At the end of the class, you’ll enjoy the meal you’ve created while engaging in open discussion and Q&A. As a final step, we’ll use the remaining fire to naturally clean and season our pans.
