Cookbook Club
Do you enjoy flipping through cookbooks to decide what to make?
Do you search through recipes for inspiration?
Come join our monthly book club, featuring cookbooks! Just register, pick a recipe from the specified cookbook, make the dish on your own, and then gather for a feast. While you eat, you can discuss the cookbook, its recipes and the process of choosing what to make and how to make it. We will aim to evenly distribute the recipes among starters and sides, main courses, and desserts.
You do not need to be an experienced cook, just an enthusiastic one!
How Do I Participate?
Register for the program.
Visit the Adult Reference Desk to view the cookbook and pick a recipe. Some copies are available to borrow.
Let us know which recipe you picked. You can call, email, or visit in person.
Then bring in your dish for a fun potluck!
About the Book
This month, instead of everyone using the same cookbook to select a recipe, we are selecting recipes from one of our online databases called Craft and Hobby.
If needed, let us know and we will print the recipes for you. As always, call us or stop by at the Reference Desk to let us know which recipe you selected.
Follow these steps to find recipes!
Go to berlinpeck.org.
Click Online Materials tab.
Under Learning and Skills click Craft & Hobby.
Enter your library barcode and click submit.
** If you are not a Berlin-Peck Memorial Library patron, your barcode may not work, if your home library does not also subscribe to Craft & Hobby.
** If this is the case, you will not be able to access this database from home, however, we can provide you with a temporary barcode to access it from a public computer at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library.
Scroll down to find Cooking or Baking and click on that box. Or go to Hobby tab at the top in the middle and then select either Cooking or Baking from the tabs directly below.
If you look to the upper right- can change by how to sort. (I do wish they had more categories/ other ways to filter. It isn’t organized the best.)
On the Left, you can select an Instructor’s name to filter results.
Also on the left, there is a search bar. You can search by ingredient or other terms.
Once you select a Class, you can start watching the video from the beginning, or you can look to the right for individual video segments.
**The video segment names don’t always tell you all the recipes that will be included in that segment. To see all the recipes that are included- see step 10. For example, in Homemade Holiday Breads, one video segment is called Breakfast Breads, but that still doesn’t tell you all the recipes included there.
To find the actual recipes, click Bonus Materials, then click Download. If the download doesn’t open automatically, usually downloads will then appear in the upper right-hand corner and you will then have to double-click to open the document.
** For the example above, once you download the recipes for Homemade Holiday Breads, you can see that the two recipes included in the Breakfast Breads segment are Gingerbread Streusel Coffee Cake and Pecan Sticky Buns.
Some other Notes:
You also can find the transcript for various video segments if you’d like to read what is said in the videos.
For the video itself, you can change the playback rate so that it plays faster or slower, and can turn on captions in English or Spanish.
