Conversations in Jazz returns on Sunday 27 September, 3pm at St John’s Church.
For this autumn edition, Ilario is joined by Jules Dos Reis — an expressive violist and composer, and one of the most distinctive voices on the UK’s contemporary jazz string scene.
Jules and Ilario first collaborated at Kings Place in London for the launch of Ilario’s Be Yourself project for piano and string quartet. Ilario was immediately captivated by Jules’s spontaneity, expressive sound and instinctive flair for improvisation. Since then, they have shared the stage on several occasions, developing a musical connection rooted in deep listening, freedom and surprise.
Jules is the founder of the improvising string trio J.A.M. String Collective, whose debut EP featured legendary British saxophonist Steve Williamson and drummer Zoe Pascal. Their music has taken them across the UK and to Glastonbury Festival, while Jules’s composition Golden Scenes has been featured on BBC Radio 3.
Described as “a skilled violist with an expressive tone, emotional depth and sincerity for days” by Jazz Parliamentary Award winner George Nelson, Jules now joins Ilario as a duo for the first time.
Inspired by the colours and atmosphere of Raindrops in Autumn, the concert will bring Ilario’s piano, guitar and voice into conversation with Jules’s warm, imaginative viola playing. Expect original compositions, reimagined jazz classics, rich grooves, free-flowing improvisation and moments of quiet reflection — all within the magical acoustic of St John’s, where music and community meet.
