A retired professor and art lover, played by Burt Lancaster (From Here to Eternity), is living a reclusive life in Rome when a surprise visit by Countess Brumonti (Silvana Mangano, recognizable from most of the best Visconti and Pasolini movies, perhaps most saliently Teorema) brings him new upstairs neighbors: the countess, her far younger lover Konrad (Helmut Berger, a/k/a “the most beautiful boy in the world”), her daughter Lietta (Claudia Marsani), and Lietta’s fiancée (Stefano Patrizi). Conversation Piece (Gruppo di famiglia in un interno), Visconti’s penultimate film, completed less than two years before his 1976 death, is as painterly and dialogue- and character-driven as fans of Visconti would expect. This newly-executed 4K restoration brings his compositions, sets, and use of color a newfound clarity.
