AZTLAN Dance Company is thrilled to present the Austin premiere of Contra Tiempo: A Dancer’s Soliloquy (2025)— A Moving Portrait of Memory, Community, and Cultural Rhythm in dance. Contra Tiempo is a powerful New-Work dance project that explores identity, memory, and the enduring spirit of dance, all set within the vibrant site-specific streets of Austin, TX.
This original dance-on-film performance traces a time-seasoned Maestra who begins another day in the dance studio where she is devoutly dedicated to her life’s passion—using dance movement as a language of inheritance. Through studio practice, she finds her legacy and her links between generations, transforming everyday movement into memories in motion. In her studio, lined with mirrors and echoing the past, a dancer balances the weight of tradition against the passion of self-expression. Each movement becomes a revision, each step a tribute - as ancestral memory fuses with modern expressive desire. At the intersection of identity, purpose, and a radical love for community, a new dance is born… A repertorio that braves to be seen…
As an AZTLAN New-Work, Contra Tiempo is presented with the creative intention of elevating local voice(s), highlighting the artistry of bodies-in-motion, and inviting audiences to reflect on what dance can preserve— the memories, stories, and the shared heartbeat of a community.
