About this Event
While nature poetry calls attention to the wonders of the plants, animals, and geographies around us, many contemporary poets who care about the environment find writing about the solace and beauty to be found in nature inadequate to current realities. Awareness of environmental degradation, environmental crises, or environmental injustice is pushing them to produce alternative kinds of environmental writing. Poets whose powerful works may be presented to illustrate these developments include Lucille Clifton, Allison Cobb, Brenda Hillman, Evelyn Reilly, Ed Roberson, Juliana Spahr, and Brian Teare.
Lynn Keller is Emerita Professor of English and former director of the Center for Culture, History, and Environment at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Now living in Sebastopol, she is also a printer at North Bay Letterpress Arts. Her most recent book is Recomposing Ecopoetics: North American Poetry of the Self-Conscious Anthropocene (University of Virginia Press, 2017).
Come early or stay after to see the Watershed Moment exhibit in Heron Hall, on view through December 19, featuring letterpress works by North Bay Letterpress Arts, some of which incorporate poetry.
