STAR-CROSSED? LOVERS IN PARALLEL UNIVERSESJust as there are innumerable stars in the heavens, so there are infinite ways a love story can play out. In Constellations by Nick Payne, being staged by Duncan’s Mercury Players, a bee keeper and a theoretical physicist meet at a party. In that single moment, an unfathomable multitude of possibilities unfolds. Their chance meeting might blossom into a meaningful relationship or a brief affair: it might lead to nothing at all. Each step along those possible paths in turn offers a new series of potential outcomes: a marriage can exist alongside a breakup and a tragic illness can exist on a parallel plane to a long life together. This clever, eloquent and moving story captures the extraordinary richness of being alive in the universe…or several universes.
Director Adrian Ingham extends the premise of numerous possibilities by casting two pairs of actors in the roles. Jess Mattin and Sarah Kate Knight play the couple, and so do Rien Vesseur and Leslie Sanchez, in separate alternating performances.
