Join us for Considering Matthew Shepard, a powerful concert event presented by Modern Sound Collective in partnership with Durham Alliance Outreach.
This moving performance invites audiences to reflect on dignity, safety, grief, resilience, and hope for 2SLGBTQIA+ people. The concert commemorates the life of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man whose 1998 murder sparked meaningful conversations around hate crimes, homophobia, and the ongoing need to build safer, more inclusive communities.
Considering Matthew Shepard is a genre-defying oratorio by composer Craig Hella Johnson. Through choral music, poetry, journalistic accounts, sacred writings, and reflections from Shepard’s parents, the work explores shock, sorrow, rage, tenderness, and ultimately, hope.
The concert will feature Modern Sound Collective’s youth and young adult choirs, Datsuzoku and Concreamus, bringing together more than 100 voices. They will be joined by a professional instrumental ensemble and vocal soloists for an unforgettable afternoon of music, remembrance, and reflection.
This event creates space for community members, allies, and supporters to listen deeply, honour those impacted by hate, and reflect on the kind of world we are responsible for building together.
