About this Event

Join REConnect and the National Trust for a day of scrub clearance on the beautiful clifftop at Port Mulgrave to help manage the habitat for wildlife. This will be a fun but physical day, cutting scrub on rough terrain and moving the brash to burn in a controlled fire (happy Bonfire Night!).

Scrub provides essential food and shelter for birds, insects, and small mammals. However, left unmanaged, it can quickly dominate the landscape, crowding out other vital ecosystems. To maintain a healthy balance, we carefully manage its spread during the late autumn and winter months - with the invaluable support of volunteers.

This is an exposed site and good level fitness is required, as well as sturdy boots, warm layers and full waterproofs. Please bring a packed lunch and a hot drink.

This is a joint event between the National Trust and Groundwork NE & Cumbria as part of the REConnect Project

River Esk Connect (REConnect) is a community engagement project funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, based around the River Esk and its coastal streams.

Starting in September 2024 and running for five years, this project’s goal is to ‘REConnect’ people to the beauty of the Esk and its surrounding landscape. We aim to help people create a deeper bond with nature and understand more the impact of climate change on the area, inspiring them to take action to make a difference.

Working together, the North York Moors National Park Authority, Groundwork NE & Cumbria, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, and Yorkshire Marine Nature Partnership will deliver educational programmes, volunteering opportunities, and sustainable tourism initiatives.

Whitby, Scarborough & Ryedale DAG will play a crucial role in ensuring that the project’s events and activities are as accessible as possible, enabling a diverse range of people to get involved. York St. John University will act as the internal evaluators, ensuring the project evolves over its five-year duration based on ongoing community feedback and input.
