Sunday November 1, 7:30pm
Consent of the Governed: Singing 250 Years Toward Democracy
First Parish in Cambridge, 3 Church St., Harvard Square
Eudaimonia Voices (Vivian Montgomery, Director) offers a bold musical take on our nation’s bisesquicentennial, blending a stunning baroque choral portrayal of tyranny and uprising with contemporary reflections on autocracy and emancipation. With the mission of supporting voting rights and democratic process, the program features excerpts from Handel’s oratorio Athalia (a heartening tale of resistance to power unchecked), rousing Shaker songs that speak to finding freedom through zealous action, and premieres of two newly commissioned compositions calling out injustice at the hands of government:
• Declare features piercing language from the Declaration of Independence set by John Howell Morrison in a spoken (shouting!) and experimental choral soundscape
• Freedom’s Charms Unfold honors Phillis Wheatley's ode to the American revolution treated with poignant harmony and driving rhythm by Eva Montgomery-Morrison
Timed to draw attention to the midterm elections, this spirited program highlights the mission of Partners in Democracy (PIDMAaction.org), a regional organization working to build a beacon for healthy democracy, giving Massachusetts voters the chance to reform systems directly. The program will include conversation with PID representatives to gain insight into key issues and means of engagement at a time that calls urgently for an informed and active electorate.
First Parish in Cambridge is an accessible venue, and this program will feature live ASL interpretation. Admission is Pay-What-You-Decide ($20 recommended), information and ticketing at https://eudaimonia-music.org/
