Connections: Art, Community & Environment
Inspired by local and global landscapes, ecosystems, wildlife, and environmental stewardship, the artists featured in this exhibition each bring a unique perspective to the conversation. Through painting, sculpture, mixed media, and repurposed materials, their work invites us to slow down, observe, and reflect on our relationship with the world around us.
For artist TaraLee Houston, art is rooted in connection - to self, community, and the environment. Her interdisciplinary practice explores the relationships that shape our lives and encourages dialogue about our shared responsibility to one another and the earth. Several emerging artists featured in the exhibition have studied under her mentorship, extending this theme of connection across generations of creators.
Other artists approach environmental themes in different ways. Wes Underhill transforms salvaged and discarded materials into imaginative sculptures, uncovering beauty and possibility in objects that might otherwise be overlooked. Trish Malcomess' work draws inspiration from the coastlines and ecosystems of Vancouver Island, exploring themes of resilience, environmental stewardship, and our relationship with the natural world. Together, the artists demonstrate how creativity can deepen our understanding of place and inspire meaningful conversations about the future of our environment.
Individually, each artist conveys connectedness through their use of colour, subject matter, and composition. Together, the collection creates a larger conversation about resilience, stewardship, belonging, and our interconnectedness with the natural world. Though varied in style and medium, the exhibition reveals a harmony born from a shared appreciation of the landscapes, ecosystems, and communities that shape life on Vancouver Island.
Complementing the exhibition is a special alcove gallery presentation celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Greenways Land Trust. Featuring artwork by Jill Banting alongside a visual timeline of Greenways' accomplishments, the display highlights three decades of conservation, environmental education, habitat restoration, and community engagement throughout our region. The Greenways exhibit extends the conversation beyond the gallery walls, demonstrating how connection to place inspires stewardship, action, and lasting environmental impact.
Together, these exhibitions celebrate the people, landscapes, and organizations working to strengthen our connection to the natural world. They remind us that meaningful environmental change begins with connection - to the land, to one another, and to the stories we share.
