Research in space has a goal to improve the quality of life and the healthspan of older adults.
Learn why and how spaceflight causes astronauts’ cardiovascular systems to age more quickly. In this talk, Dr. Hughson explores research addressing these health challenges and how it may help treat ailments on Earth.
About the speaker
Richard Hughson is Schlegel Research Chair in Vascular Aging and Brain Health and the Senior Director of Research at the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. His aging-focused research looks at relationships between arterial stiffness and reductions in brain blood flow as well as why people have non-accidental or unexplained falls. He also studies accelerated vascular aging in astronauts and has been the principal investigator on 7 projects conducted on the ISS where he found accelerated rates of arterial stiffening and development of insulin resistance. Richard Hughson competed for Canada in the marathon event
