Connection: Photographing the Invisible Through Creative Storytelling

How do we photograph something we cannot see? How can a single image
About this Event

Join photographer Estelle Cadwallader for an engaging and collaborative photography workshop exploring the meaning of human connection and how photography can communicate emotions, relationships and experiences.

Part of Estelle's Pockets of Community MA research project, this workshop invites participants to think creatively about the connections we form with others and the different ways these relationships shape our sense of community.

Through group discussion, examples of documentary photography and an imaginative photographic challenge, we'll explore how images can communicate feelings and experiences that aren't always immediately visible.

Whether it's friendship, support, happiness, loneliness or belonging, photography offers countless ways to express the things that connect us.

What to expect

We'll begin by exploring a central question:

What does belonging to a community bring you?

Together, we'll consider the importance of friendship, shared experiences, emotional support and the everyday interactions that create connections between people.

We'll then look at the work of photographers who have explored human relationships and connection in different ways.

From Nan Goldin's intimate photographs of friends and chosen families to Tom Wood's observations of everyday social life in Merseyside, we'll discover how photographers capture the moments, relationships and shared experiences that bring people together.

We'll also explore how photographers including Chris Killip, Sian Davey and Anthony Luvera have represented relationships, belonging and community through documentary and collaborative approaches.

Importantly, we'll consider how connection can be communicated without photographing people at all, using objects, spaces, memories and visual details to suggest human presence and relationships.

Take part in our creative photography challenge

The main activity is called Photograph the Invisible, an imaginative photography challenge that invites you to communicate an emotion, experience or idea through images.

Working in pairs or small groups, you'll receive a selection of creative prompt cards featuring words such as:

  • Friendship: How might a photograph represent a meaningful relationship?
  • Belonging: What does feeling part of something look like?
  • Happiness: Can you capture a feeling of joy without photographing a smiling face?
  • Support: How could an object, gesture or space communicate care?
  • Loneliness: Can an empty space or everyday detail suggest isolation?
  • Hope: How might light, colour or composition communicate optimism?
  • Acceptance: What visual clues could suggest being welcomed or understood?
  • Connection: How can a photograph communicate the relationships between people, places and experiences?

You'll choose a prompt without revealing it to the other participants and create a photograph or series of images that communicates your chosen idea.

The challenge is to think beyond the obvious, experimenting with composition, lighting, perspective, symbolism and storytelling.

There are no right or wrong answers. The aim is to encourage experimentation and discover how different people interpret and communicate abstract ideas through photography.

Sharing our photographs and perspectives

After the activity, we'll come together to share our photographs and see whether the group can identify the emotions or ideas they represent.

We'll discuss how different photographic choices influence the way an image is understood and why the same photograph might communicate different meanings to different viewers.

We'll also reflect on what makes an image emotionally engaging and how photography can help us communicate experiences that might be difficult to express in words.

This is an opportunity to learn from one another, develop your creative confidence and discover new ways of telling stories through images.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is open to anyone interested in photography, creativity, community or visual storytelling.

You don't need previous photography experience or specialist equipment. The emphasis is on creative thinking, collaboration and personal expression rather than technical ability.

Whether you're an experienced photographer, enjoy taking pictures on your phone or simply want to try something new, you're welcome to take part.

The activities are designed to encourage creativity and discussion in a relaxed, supportive environment where different experiences and perspectives are valued.

Photography, collaboration and consent

This workshop forms part of Pockets of Community, a non-profit MA research project exploring community, belonging and human connection through photography.

The project places importance on respectful participation, collaboration and individual creative expression.
