Confronting the Global Challenge of Preventing Mass Atrocities

Advocates for the prevention of mass atrocities currently face two intersecting challenges. Worldwide, there appears to be a growing number of both new and ongoing episodes of genocide and mass atrocities. At the same time, it is increasingly rare to observe robust, coordinated action to help prevent or respond to genocide and mass atrocities. In this lecture, Dr. Solomon will discuss some common trends in genocide and mass atrocities worldwide, and why prevention remains an urgent priority for future international action.

Dr. Daniel Solomon is a research associate for the Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide, where he conducts research about contemporary genocide and mass atrocities and tools and strategies for their prevention. He has a BA in International Politics and a PhD in Government from Georgetown University, where he completed his dissertation on the determinants of pogrom violence. His academic research about the causes and consequences of political violence has been published in several academic journals and edited volumes.
