About this Event

Spain: 50 Years from Dictatorship to Democracy, a series of conferences on memory, culture and transition

Instituto Cervantes London is hosting a series of lectures on the 50th anniversary of democracy in Spain.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the beginning of democracy in Spain, Instituto Cervantes is organising a series of four lectures at its centre in London. The aim is to invite attendees to reflect on the country's recent past and its impact on the present. There will also be a screening of Ken Loach's historic film Land and Freedom, which will be attended by leading Hispanist Professor Paul Preston.

The programme begins with an analysis of the late Franco era and the opening up of Spain, followed by a critical review of Franco's figure before the Civil War and the legacy of the dictatorship in the contemporary world. The series will then focus on the Spanish Transition, approached from a political and cultural perspective, culminating in a panel of experts who will discuss the legacy of Francoism in the LGBTQ+ community.

British Spanish Society-Instituto Cervantes Annual Conference

Late Francoism, Opening Up and Democratic Reconciliation by Tom Burns Marañón

Between Franco's death on 20 November 1975 and the national referendum on 6 December 1975, which overwhelmingly supported a constitutional monarchy, Spain underwent an unprecedented orderly transition from a long-lasting dictatorship to a Western-style parliamentary democracy. Tom Burns Marañón followed the process closely as a journalist with privileged access to its key players and, as a scholar of contemporary Spanish history, can offer insight into how and why it was a model of successful regime change. In his lecture, “When Spain surprised the world”, he analyses who did what half a century ago.

Tom Burns Marañón read Modern History at Oxford, where he was a pupil of Raymond Carr, and covered the death of General Franco, the succession of King Juan Carlos and Spain’s transition to democracy for Reuters. He subsequently wrote for The Washington Post and the Financial Times, and he has published a number of books in Spain, including Conversaciones sobre el Rey and La Monarquía necesaria. Tom has for a number of years written twice weekly columns for Expansión, Spain’s main business newspaper, and his latest book, El legado de Juan Carlos I , is due to be published in November.
