Concert Series - Michael Murphy
Inspired by master storytellers such as John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, and Leonard Cohen, along with the fiery blues influence of Luther Allison, Murphy brings a distinctive sound built around thoughtful lyrics, expressive guitar work, and an unmistakably deep, gravelly voice.
Known to many as a “Big Dog” for both his commanding presence and powerful vocals, Murphy can move from dark and haunting to vibrant and energetic, creating performances that are as introspective as they are engaging.
His music reflects decades of songwriting and performing throughout the Midwest at festivals, colleges, coffeehouses, bars, and listening rooms. His recordings include Live & Blue, released in 1999, and his 2022 all-original solo project, Black, Two Sugars.
Along with his own material, Murphy brings a songwriter’s sensibility to the music he covers. Rather than simply recreating familiar songs, he respects the original while adding his own voice, style, and interpretation — making each one feel uniquely his.
Expect an evening of Americana, folk, blues, compelling storytelling, and songs with plenty of soul.
