The TBI population is one of the most challenging for PTs to treat. Given the high level of adaptability and skill needed, both technical and interpersonal, we hold this annual training session to offer a unique setting for TBI clinicians to gather together.

The latest evidence will be demonstrated step-by-step through patient case studies. Clinicians will benefit from opportunities to share personal experiences and view these complex caseloads from a more holistic lens.

Description: This 1.5-day intermediate level course will cover the continuum of physical therapy care for adults following a Traumatic Brain Injury. The content will focus on integration of movement systems diagnosis and application of the latest evidence to support evaluation strategies, outcome measures, interventions, and management of common co-morbidities in this population. Video case presentations will guide discussion of the principles of examination, developing movement-based diagnosis, treatment planning, interventions, and advancement in low, moderate, and high functioning patients with traumatic brain injury.

Special topics related to vision, learning and cognition, movement disorders, and the pediatric client will be addressed on Day 2. Clinicians treating individuals with TBI across the continuum care will gain new insights and strategies for managing this challenging population.

Learning Objectives -- Participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the etiology and pathophysiology underlying TBI.
  2. Develop a framework for physical therapy examination for patients with TBI.
  3. Identify 3 common medical complications and comorbidities in individuals with TBI and discuss how they impact treatment planning.
  4. Discuss the principles and practices of evidence-guided treatment for functions and activities of individuals with TBI.
  5. Apply examination findings to optimize treatment planning and goal setting.
