Haverford Township is excited to launch its first-ever curbside composting program, beginning on July 13, 2026.
The program is free and available to all residents who receive township trash collection services and is designed to divert food scraps and other compostable materials from the waste stream, reducing disposal costs while creating environmental benefits. Compostable food waste will be collected alongside brush and yard waste and transported to a commercial composting facility, where it will be turned into a valuable resource rather than ending up in a landfill.
To help residents get started, the township will host a Curbside Composting Kit Giveaway on SUNDAY, June 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Township Building (1014 Darby Road). Residents can pick up a free composting starter kit, learn about acceptable materials, and ask questions about the program. If you cannot attend the giveaway, composting kits will remain available at the Township Building while supplies last during summer business hours. Residents may also participate using their own 5-gallon bucket with a tight-fitting lid, which can be purchased at most home improvement retailers. Paper bag liners are optional but encouraged to help keep containers clean. Buckets with no lids will not be picked up.
Beginning July 13, participants can simply place accepted compostable materials in a 5-gallon bucket at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on Mondays that coincide with scheduled brush collection. The township is also expanding its brush collection program to accept additional yard waste materials, including weeds, grass clippings, and garden trimmings.
