Composer in the Loop—Exploring AI in Music

This admission-free, full-day event welcomes everyone interested in AI-supported musical processes. Over the course of a year, ten composers & sound artists have explored the opportunities and risks of AI-based composition as part of Musikfonds’ Scholarship Program on Artificial Intelligence.

At the core of the event are diverse artistic perspectives that propose creative alternatives to the largely uncontrollable spread of corporate AI. Alongside the musical presentations, a panel discussion will be held with the scholarship jury, offering insights into the jury member’s perspectives on AI in music.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is remixing the future of music. From composition to production to the way we listen, AI is shaking up the music industry at breakneck speed. The pace of innovation in AI is challenging long-held ideas about artistic creativity and the craft of composition. What was once the domain of human craftsmanship and emotion is now being challenged by algorithms that can generate entire musical works in seconds.

Generative AI is evolving so quickly that even experts struggle to tell the difference between human-made and machine-generated music. The lines between human originality, emotional expression, and technological innovation are blurring. New and unexpected forms of creativity are reshaping the music world, while raising fundamental copyright and ethical questions around how music is created, distributed, and consumed.

But how is artificial intelligence changing musical creation? What are the limits of collaboration between humans and machines? And will the uniqueness of human creativity persist in the age of AI? These and other questions are at the heart of Composer in the Loop, an event by Musikfonds at radialsystem.

In a series of short live performances and long durational installations, the fellows present strategies that open up new ways of engaging with AI in music, while also critically reflecting on the far-reaching social implications of AI technologies. A special focus is placed on open-source tools, which emphasize the independent, experimental spirit of the fellows.
