Complex Adult Safeguarding - Drug and Alcohol Training Session

Context
Substance use can intersect with self-neglect, exploitation, domestic abuse, homelessness, poor physical health, mental ill health and risks to family members. These situations often raise complex questions about autonomy, mental capacity, engagement, risk and the responsibilities of different agencies.
Using current legislation, safeguarding principles and multi-agency best practice, participants will explore how to identify concerns, conduct person-centred assessments and make proportionate, defensible decisions. The course will also consider prevention, early intervention, protection and access to appropriate health, social care and substance-use support.

The course is suitable for experienced practitioners, managers and safeguarding professionals working with adults across the following:

- Safeguarding and multi-agency partnerships
The content is aimed at practitioners working at an advanced level and assumes prior understanding of adult safeguarding. Please note that this is an intermediate-level course. Participants should have an understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and some basic substance use awareness prior to attending. If you are unsure about your suitability, please email us.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the prevalence, causes, risk factors and wider effects of drug and alcohol use on adults, families and communities.
- Recognise indicators of substance use and related safeguarding concerns.
- Understand how substance use may increase vulnerability to neglect, self-neglect, exploitation, domestic abuse, and co-occurring mental health needs.
- Apply relevant legislation, policy and safeguarding procedures to complex situations.
- Use risk-informed, strengths-based and person-centred approaches to assessment and decision-making.
- When assessing risk, consider autonomy, mental capacity, executive functioning, coercion, and the impact of trauma.
- Identify appropriate support, intervention, referral and escalation pathways.
- Apply principles of prevention, early intervention and protection when working with adults, families and carers.
- Work more effectively with partner agencies where needs and risks span organisational boundaries.
- Reflect on practice and identify actions to improve safeguarding responses at the individual and organisational levels.
