Georgians of all ages from all over the state will join efforts to document our pollinators. Won’t you join us?Phinizy Swamp Nature Park is proud to be hosting a pollinator count as part of the Great Georgia Pollinator Census! The Southeast Pollinator Census is a historical initiative where Georgians will record the numbers and types of pollinators that populate our state during late summer.
Come out to the swamp to help us count our lovely, buzzy pollinators. Meet at the front picnic pavilion, next to the silos. During the event, you will focus on one pollinator plant at the park. For fifteen minutes you will count and identify any insects that land on that plant. You will not count insects that are just buzzing around, only those that land on the plant your studying. After counting, we will upload your counts to a form on the project website. These counts will be compiled to help get a picture of the pollinator populations in Georgia.
You do NOT have to be an entomologist to do these counts; we are not looking for species level identification. You will place the insects into categories that we will help you distinguish:
Bumble Bees
Carpenter Bees
Honey Bees
Small Bees
Wasps
Flies
Butterflies
Other Insects
If you’d like, you can download and print the Insect Identification & Counting Guide from the project website and you will have all the information you need to know to decide how the insects fit into the categories. We will also have copies of the guide for the event and be there to help you.
This event is FREE! Just let us know you are coming.
If you would like to attend or have any questions, please email Kim Dillard at [email protected].
