Community Learnings: Richard J. Friswell on Graven Images: Colonial New England Gravestones as Art and HistoryUncover the silent stories etched in stone! Join us for a captivating "Community Learnings" lecture with Richard J. Friswell, MPhil, a Visiting Scholar at Wesleyan University and Co-director of Wasch Seminars.
In his presentation, Graven Images, Richard will explore the fascinating world of colonial New England gravestones. These prevalent historical markers, found in towns like ours across the region, offer a unique glimpse into early American life. Having endured for centuries, each headstone serves as a poignant testament to lives lived, enduring relationships, and the ever-present reality of death.
Richard will share a sampling of these "graven images," delving into their rich symbolism and revealing 18th-century perspectives on life and death, including poignant and even humorous epitaphs about the hereafter. You'll learn about the identifiable styles of itinerant carvers and how design elements evolved over time. Discover the rich narratives preserved on these stones—tales of prosperity, influence, and adventure from our deceased ancestors.
Richard J. Friswell has a lifelong interest in colonial gravestones, having grown up in Norwichtown, CT. He is also the author of several works of historical fiction, including Merchants of Deceit (2024) and Hudson River Chronicles (2019).
