Cenzontle Language Justice Cooperative is excited to host our next "Interpreting for Social Justice" training with a special focus on simultaneous interpreting in community settings. This is an intensive, in-person training that requires full participation for the entire schedule. Lunch and snacks are provided, and childcare is available upon request! This training is for YOU if you...
Are fluent in English and Spanish...and Spanglish!
Grew up in a Spanish-speaking environment and/or have personal experience interpreting for family and members of your community in a variety of settings.
Want to use your language skills to support your community.
Are currently working in a bilingual setting where you end up interpreting (or "translating") but have never received adequate guidance or training.
Have been curious about getting a job as an interpreter.
Want to build relationships and learn alongside others who share similar experiences, and have fun while doing it!
Live or work in Western North Carolina. Our main focus is WNC but we're open to applicants from outside this area, especially if they are in the Southeast, and anyone is welcome to apply.
NEXT TRAINING: January 17-19th, 2025 (Friday 5-7pm, Saturday 8am-6pm, Sunday 8am-5pm). Due to the fact that the curriculum builds upon itself, we will only consider those who can attend the entire training. Location: El Porvenir Centro Económico y Cultural en Asheville, North Carolina.
The deadline to apply is Monday, Dec 9th. We'll be in touch by 5:00pm ET on December 13th to let you know if your application was accepted or if you were placed on the waiting list. Note: Filling out this application does not guarantee you a spot at the training.
Cost to attend: We have a "pay what you can" sliding scale fee between $150 to $350 per person. If you plan to attend on behalf of an employer or organization, please let us know whether that organization may be willing to cover some or all of the cost for you to attend. We're happy to provide more information, including references. Are you or your organization able to pay on the higher end or even more than $350?! Great! Anything you can offer will help cover the cost of others who aren't able to afford the full rate. **We do not want cost to be a barrier to participation; therefore, NO ONE WILL BE TURNED AWAY FOR LACK OF FUNDS.**
Covid protocol: Masking is optional but Covid testing will be required at the beginning of the training. Cenzontle will provide tests and masks. More info to come!
Who is Cenzontle? Cenzontle Language Justice Cooperative is a local business in Asheville, NC that is cooperatively owned by immigrant, women, and queer people. Our services include interpretation, translation, and capacity building trainings with a focus on Western North Carolina, although we provide services to groups all over the country and beyond. As demand for trained simultaneous interpreters continues to grow, we want to skill up bilingual folks in our community.
