Community Film Screening Series: Monoculture Forestry out of Wallmapu
About this Event
Screenings will take place September 16, 23rd, and 30th at the Clinton Park Fieldhouse in East Vancouver. All films in Spanish with English subtitles. Doors open at 6:30 with screening starting promptly at 7pm. If weather allows, the screenings will be held outside. Please dress accordingly for the weather.
The program is organized by marcela oñate-trules as part of her MFA project and research, which looks into histories of colonialism, extractivism, and resistance in Wallmapu, the ancestral territory of the Mapuche Nation.
September 16th - Plantar Pobreza by Periodico Resumén, 72 min
We're starting the series with Plantar Pobreza by news outlet Periodico Resumen to get grounded on the history of extractive forestry in Wallmapu. The film explores the legacy and impacts of monoculture forestry in the region.
Pre -screening we will be joined by special guest Pablo Neipan, Mapuche geographer and PhD student in Forestry at the University of British Columbia with a focus on Mapuche forest management to talk about his work, research, and lived experience.
September 23rd - CAM: Liberar Una Nación dir. Edgar Wang, 90 min
CAM: Liberar Una Nación takes the viewer into the inside of the Coordinador Arauco Malleco, a clandestine Mapuche organization fighting against extractivism and colonialism in Wallmapu.
September 30th - Mencer Ni Pewma dir. Francisco Huichaqueo, 32 min
Mencer Ni Pewma is a short experimental film by Mapuche artist and filmmaker Francisco Huichaqueo. The film combines archives, poetry, and performance to create an archive for the future – a register of Mapuche resistance for the generations yet to come.
Donations will be accepted at the screenings. All donations are going to the mother of Pablo Marchant, a Mapuche activist and member of Coordinador Arauco Malleco (CAM) who was murdered by Chilean police at 2021.
