Take root in the Horn Farm's growing ecosystem of land stewards and nature healers!
After participating in a comprehensive training day, members of our Community Crew volunteer program gain access to a specialized calendar of service-learning workdays led by Horn Farm staff and volunteer leaders. As a member of our Crew, you can support ongoing restoration activities around the farm, partake in seasonal plantings and harvests, assist with classes and events, and more.
While enriching our ability to regenerate the land and educate the community, Community Crew members gain resources and experiences to connect with nature on a deeper level. Members benefit from “learning while doing” in the field, spending time with the Horn Farm’s staff, and becoming part of a network of like-minded community members who share space, resources, ideas, and the muscle to grow our culture of confident, empathetic caretakers for the Earth.
Example activities for community crew volunteers include:
🌱LAND STEWARDSHIP🌱
- Tending spaces for foraging and ecological education by pruning, weeding, monitoring trails, and bolstering sites with new plants.
- Participating in annual harvests, like elderberry, American hazelnut, sunchoke, and basketry willows.
- Monitoring and tending plantings in our riparian buffers.
- Seasonal weeding in the perennial fields.
- Collecting and dispersing seeds.
🗨COMMUNITY OUTREACH🗨
- Participating in tabling events.
- Assisting instructors with classes by helping with set-up, clean-up, and providing attendees with an overview of the Horn Farm Center.
- Gathering photo, video, and testimonial content during classes.
- Supporting or leading custom programs–like tours or volunteer workdays–with visiting groups.
- Serving as volunteer “leaders” during the Horn Farm’s annual signature event: Wild & Uncommon Weekend.
