Community Creates: Ledger Painting with Avis Charley

Join contemporary Native artist Avis Charley for a workshop exploring the tradition and creative possibilities of ledger painting.
About this Event

Join contemporary Indigenous artist Avis Charley for a special hands-on workshop exploring the tradition and creative possibilities of ledger painting. Participants will have an opportunity to learn more about this distinctive art form and create their own work inspired by the stories, imagery, and visual language of ledger art.

The workshop will take place in two parts. The first session (10 a.m.–12 p.m.) is limited to 25 participants, led by Avis Charley, offering participants an opportunity to work directly with the artist and explore her approach to ledger painting; advance registration is free and required.

The second portion of the workshop is open to everyone (12–4 p.m.) and invites participants to continue exploring ledger painting independently. While Avis will not be providing instruction during this portion, participants are welcome to experiment, create, and develop their own ledger-inspired artwork, and explore the Tooveep (The Land) exhibition in the SUMA galleries.

Whether you are new to ledger painting or already familiar with the form, this workshop offers an opportunity to explore a rich artistic tradition while creating something uniquely your own.
