Community Conversation on Addiction, Mental Health, and Stigma with John Mabry

Mid-State Technical College will host John Mabry, a former Hollywood actor (known for his roles in NCIS, ER, and Superbad), counselor, and nationally recognized mental health and addiction recovery advocate, for a powerful community conversation focused on breaking the silence around mental health and substance use.
Drawing on his own experiences with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and substance use disorder—including the devastating loss of his brother to a drug overdose—John shares an honest story of struggle, recovery, and resilience. His message emphasizes compassion, connection, and the importance of recognizing what may be happening beneath the surface, even when someone appears to be doing just fine.
Through his ACT method—Acknowledge, Choose, Tell— John gives audiences a practical first step toward speaking up, seeking help, and starting meaningful conversations. His message is especially powerful for people who work hard, show up for others, and may be carrying more than anyone around them knows.
John’s story is ultimately a story of hope: that breaking the silence can be the beginning of a comeback.
This event is open to all community members.
Tuesday, November 17
7:00 p.m. • Performing Arts Center of Wisconsin Rapids
