About this Event
We're bringing students, community members and charities together to celebrate our LGBTQ+ Student Network's chosen theme: Queer Joy as Resistance. This event is delivered with Students' Union UCL's Social Impact Team.
Come along from 5pm to enjoy a vibrant programme of pre-film activities:
- A badge-making session led by Badge Cafe
- Networking with local LGBTQ+ charities - find out about the amazing work these organisations are doing and how you can get involved. Organisations include Positive East, Forest Gate Pride, and East London Out Project.
- Meet the founder of Footprints of Love - a community storytelling project preserving the LGBTQ+ history of Newham, and find out how you can get involved!
- A delicious selection of free vegan refreshments provided by Queer Brewing and The Female Glaze
A screening of Pride will begin at 7pm sharp, followed by a short student-led panel discussion themed around Queer Joy as Resistance, with panel members Ben Walters and Ana de Matos.
About the film
In 1984, with Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative Party in power, a group of lesbian and gay activists, led by Mark Ashton, find unlikely allies in a collective of Welsh miners taking industrial action following pit closures.
With both groups equally despised by Thatcher, Ashton proposes a show of solidarity between them, but tabloid smears and a frosty reception from the miners' families threaten to derail his plans.
