Getting ready for the Saturday evening meeting of the Van Wert Amateur Radio Club ! Big on the agenda is Scouting's Klondike Derby on the 24th. Area hams assist the Scout leadership with communications for the event. Here's a run down of what you need to know to help out:We will meet at 8:30 at Cooper Lodge, Camp Lakota, Defiance Ohio, beginning with a briefing, where you'll get last minute instructions and assignment to a "city" where you'll meet with the "mayor" and provide communication for anything he needs from the event "governor" at the main compound, Cooper Lodge. Typically there is little routine communications, but standing by for any emergency is critical.
We will be using a cross-band repeater system for the first time, operating on an input of 446.075 and an output of 146.52, to help cover the large area that encompasses the Klondike run. Never fear, if you don't have a dual band, dual receive HT, you can borrow one from the club OR just operate on .52 simplex, since the repeater output is on .52.
Lunch is vegetable soup courtesy of W8FY's Cheryl and Dave KB8JYV; feel free to bring something to go with it. Or, sometimes the radio operators are invited to eat with the city they are assigned to. Leaving the camp is also a lunch option, but not very handy!
Plan for an all day adventure or come for as long as you can. We will also be setting up an HF rig (or two) and make some Winter Field Day contacts as a demo for the Scouts and leaders. The more the merrier! A demonstration of Amateur Television is also in the works!
