“Als een stad niet gemaakt is voor de kinderen, zal het ook niet gemaakt zijn voor de burgers", dit zijn de woorden van Aldo van Eyck, een Nederlands architect die bekend staat om zijn weeshuizen, scholen en zo’n 700 openbare speeltuinen die hij ontwierp voor Amsterdam in een tijd waarin spelen altijd kosten met zich meebracht voor ouders of verzorgers van het kind. Hoe zien onze stadmakers kinderen voor zich? Schenken ze hun het basisrecht van spelen, rennen, leren, of onderdeel zijn van een gemeenschap? Het antwoord is: Niet altijd, niet aan elk kind, en niet op een manier die hun ontwikkeling als toekomstige burgers van het democratische bewustzijn ondersteunt. Deze leegte wordt opgevuld met social media, consumentistisch gedrag en een sterk prestatiegericht ontwikkeling. De prijs hiervan wordt niet betaald met geld, maar met het geestelijke welzijn en gezondheid van de kinderen en hun families. Het komt niet uit het niets dat het huidige kabinet een verbod wil opstellen op social media voor kinderen. Echter kunnen verboden en beperkingen maar zoveel betekenen, wat nodig is is toegang, gelijkheid en een mogelijkheid om andere keuzes te kunnen maken, als kind én als ouder/verzorger. Een aantal non-profitorganisaties springt in om deze leegte op te vullen. Dit is het startpunt waarmee we op woensdag het gesprek zullen beginnen.

Deze middag nodigen we kinderen (7 t/m 12 jaar oud)en hun ouders uit om deel te nemen en samen te gaan zitten met: docenten, curriculumontwikkelaars, begeleiders en game- en tech designers. Mensen wiens werk kinderen helpt op te groeien tot mensen die zich verbonden voelen met zichzelf en hun eigen creativiteit, die weten hoe ze zich kunnen uiten en met falen kunnen omgaan, die verbonden zijn met de natuur en een gezonde relatie hebben met technologie.

Meer over de sprekers en performers: Ontwerper Lisa Hu vertelt waarom en hoe Stichting Terra-Nova Minimaatschappij kinderen leert over democratie: hoe je in gesprek gaat en luistert naar mensen met wie je het misschien niet meteen eens bent, maar met wie je wél gedeelde grond kunt vinden. Theatergezelschap Het Zuidland laat zien hoe performatief schrijven en acteren het zelfvertrouwen, gemeenschapsgevoel en de communicatieve vaardigheden van kinderen kunnen versterken. Het helpt de kinderen meer bewust te worden van hun eigen gedachten, gevoelens en maakt het makkelijker deze te delen met anderen. Een vaardigheid die essentieel is in het vormen van vriendschappen en empathie. IVN, natuureducatie, moedigt kinderen aan hun relatie met de natuur beter te begrijpen en uit te leggen waarom actief zijn hun helpt om buiten de gebaande paden van hun binnen onderwijs te treden en hun stad zelf te ontdekken. Marvin de Kempel is een docent aan de PABO, hij leidt toekomstige leerkrachten op. Hij zal ons vertellen over de veranderende rol van leerkrachten in het jonge kind-onderwijs, hoe de tijd die op school wordt doorgebracht, zowel maatschappelijke,- als gezondheidseffecten heeft, en waarom huidige curricula steeds meer afstand nemen van de prestatiegerichte benadering.

Deze middag wordt een kleurrijke mix van gesprekken en workshops, aangevuld met een vertoning van de documentaire Uncreative Playgrounds van Barbara Vignaux. We worden daarbij deskundig begeleid door Denise Huigen, ontwerper en trainer aan de PABO.

Common Grounds #5: How do you make your city a playground?

If a city is not made for children, it is not made for citizens either’, these are Aldo van Eyck’s words, a Dutch architect known for orphanages, schools and some 700 public playgrounds he designed for Amsterdam in an era when playtime always came at a cost for the parents or caregivers of the child. How do the makers of our cities envision children? Do they grant them the basic rights of playing, running, learning, being in nature and in community? The answer is not always, not for every child, and not in a way that supports their development as future citizens with democratic consciousness. This void is filled with social media, consumerist behaviour, and heavily performance-oriented development. The cost of this is not only financial, it is often paid by the mental well-being of kids and their families. It’s not for nothing that the current government wants to ban social media for children. Bans and limitations can only get you so far, what you need is access, occasion and opportunity to make other choices, both as a kid and as a parent. A series of non-profit organizations step in to fill the void. This is where this Wednesday finds its starting point.

We invite children (7 to 12 years old) and their parents to join us this afternoon, when will sit together with educators, curriculum builders, facilitators and game and tech designers whose work enables children to grow into people that feel connected to themselves and their own creativity, know how to express themselves and deal with failure, are connected to nature and have a healthy relationship with technology.

More about the speakers/performers: Designer Lisa Hu will tell about why and how Terranova Minimaatschappij teaches democracy to kids, how to talk and listen to people we might not agree with right away, but with whom we can find shared ground nonetheless. The theater company Het Zuidland will show us how performance writing and acting can strengthen confidence, community and communication skills of kids, making them more aware of their own thoughts and feelings and making it easier for them to share those with others – a skill that is essential in building friendships and empathy. IVN Natuureducatie will encourage children to understand the relationship they have with nature and why being active in nature helps them live outside the bubble of indoor curricula while discovering their city for themselves. Marvin de Kempel is an educator for PABO students, he teaches our future teachers, and he’ll tell us about the evolving role of early education teachers and how the time spent at school has both societal and health effects, and why current curricula are shifting away from a performance-oriented approach. … This afternoon will be a colourful mix of conversations and workshops, as well as a screening of a documentary, ‘An Imaginary Playground’ by Barbara Vignaux. We will be skillfully guided by Denise Huigen, a designer and trainer at the PABO.
