BACKGROUND:
On Dec. 18, 2025, the federal government proposed new rules restricting Medicaid funding for hospitals that provide care to trans youth. The move greatly threatens access to essential care for trans youth across the country, especially since the practice is already banned in 27 states including in Iowa.
Care for trans youth saves lives and is supported by major medical associations including the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Medical Association, and the American College of Physicians.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
We’re asking our community to make public comments in opposition to the proposed rules. The deadline for public comment is Tuesday, February 17.
To help encourage public comments, we're hosting a series of comment writing parties with community partners. Join us for an overview of the proposed rules and a step-by-step walk through of how to make comments

Some commenters, like trans youth or their families or providers of gender-affirming care, might be particularly vulnerable to risks and should carefully consider their options for submitting comments and the details they wish to disclose
