Join us at Linn Park for a powerful culmination of the Power of Us Summit, featuring the planting of a black cherry tree in honor of Lewis Houston, a Black man tragically lynched in 1883. This marks the first of 33 trees to be planted across Jefferson County as part of the Black Cherry Tree Project (BCTP) to commemorate the county’s lynching victims.Through art, activism, and community dialogue, the Black Cherry Tree Project honors the lives of these victims, focusing on healing and reconciliation. Every tree will be accompanied by custom artworks created by local artists and marked with the victim’s name, date of death, and a QR code to learn more about their life.
This public ceremony is part of the national Cultural Week of Action on Race and Democracy, sponsored by Race Forward, Americans for the Arts, and Highlander Research & Education Center. Come out to engage with our summit cohort’s work, witness the planting of a living memorial, and be part of Birmingham’s commitment to building a multiracial democracy.
