[ 19 February - Commemoration Event in the Embassy ]
On 19 February 2025, the Irish Embassy will host an event as part of its St. Brigid’s Day programme to commemorate Irish women who were imprisoned in Ravensbrück Concentration Camp during the Second World War. The event will take place shortly before the 80th Anniversary of the liberation of the camp.
Based a short distance north of Berlin, Ravensbrück Concentration Camp was the largest camp for women prisoners in Nazi Germany. Those imprisoned there were subjected to inhumane conditions.
These women included Irish women, Sister Kate McCarthy, who worked for the French Resistance, as well as Catherine Crean, Mary O'Kelly de Galway (neé Cummins) and Agnes Margaret Flanagan who were active in the Belgian Resistance respectively.
The event will include the following speakers:
- Dr. Andrea Genest, Director Ravensbrück Memorial Museum
- Catherine Fleming, historian and author of the book From Rebel County To Ravensbrück Camp: The Remarkable Story of Kate McCarthy from Cork, Ireland.
- , author of Blood and Bone, a fictional account inspired by the experience of Irish women imprisoned in Ravensbrück.
It will be moderated by , journalist with Deutsche Welle.
Musical accompaniment at the event will be provided by the Berlin-based choir .
[ 20 February - Visit to Ravensbrück Memorial Site ]
The following day, 20 February 2025, the Embassy is coordinating a visit to and guided tour of Ravensbrück Memorial Museum at 11:00.
Travel to Ravensbrück will be at particpants' own expense. The recommended routes to Ravensbrück from Berlin are below. An optional lunch will also be available on the day.

Getting to Ravensbrück Memorial Museum from Berlin:
- By Train
Fürstenberg/Havel is easily accessible by the RE 5 regional train, which runs hourly from Berlin towards Stralsund/Rostock. From Fürstenberg station, it is a 25-minute walk to the memorial site. Alternatively, our staff at the Visitor Information Center will be happy to arrange a taxi for you to make your journey easier. - By Car
Fürstenberg/Havel is located about 80 km north of Berlin and is easily reached via the B 96 (Berlin–Stralsund). From Fürstenberg, the memorial site is signposted. Free parking is available on-site.
