This course is designed to be fully immersive: minimal classroom instruction, maximum time in the field, so you walk away confident in your ability to improvise, adapt, and thrive when the elements are against you.

What You’ll Learn
Below are the core modules you’ll cover. Each skill set builds on the last, culminating in a final survival scenario where you’ll apply everything you’ve learned.
Shelter Building
• Construct debris shelters and lean-tos using only natural materials
• Understand site selection to ward off wind, rain, and cold
• Practice sleeping safely in makeshift bivvies overnight
Fire Craft
• Friction-based fire-lighting methods (bow drill)
• Using modern tools (magnesium striker, ferrocerium rod)
• Fire maintenance, feeding, and smoke control techniques
Water Procurement & Purification
• Locate natural water sources (streams, runs, dew)
• Filter and boil methods for safe hydration
• Improvised condensation traps (solar stills)
Food Foraging & Preparation
• Identify common edible plants, berries, and insects native to SW England
• Simple trapping techniques for small game (deadfall set, snares)
• Foraging safety—what to avoid and how to test edibility
Navigation Skills
• Map reading fundamentals—contour lines, grid references, scale
• Compass use, bearings, back-bearing, and pacing
• Natural navigation—using sun, stars, and terrain features
