Comic Book Launch: Goodbye my General
About this Event
Conceived as a play turned comic book, Goodbye my General tracks the journney of a Napoleonic general and his staff over the time of 24 hours, while difficult decision loom and morale unravels in his camp.
A staged performance will bring a scene of the book to life.
Copies will be available for sale on a PWYW (pay what you wish) basis throughout the evening.
Sketches and pages showing the working process will be on display.

Background:
In times when dictators can rise to power in democracies (twice) and while travelling the route Napoleon, I started to think about how humans work together as groups and- in the extreme- build units that are highly structured- to the point of accepting violence and death in battle. Why are there wars? What becomes of a leader in these situations and is survival/ winning only dependent on better supply lines? Also, who puts value on the individual life, on integrity? How do memories help us get through the worst? Can you find the absurd in the serious? and many other questions came up. The text that morphed from a play to a comic comprises the story of the lost son, what the sphinx would tell us and how to preserve food. In the span of a single day one of Napoleon's generals and staff gets stretched to their limits and his authority and camp unravel. The characters are all cats in an allegory of unknowableness and familiarity, based on contemporary 19th century caricatures.
