Columbia Dance's Fort Vancouver Nutcracker | December 18–20

There will be tutus and Tchaikovsky, magic and mystery. But this Nutcracker also features beavers stealing a top hat, dancing wapato plants, a mystical woman conjuring an abalone moon, and Oregon Trail children arriving by covered wagon.
Columbia Dance's Fort Vancouver Nutcracker brings the beloved ballet to life through the history and imagination of 1840s Fort Vancouver. The story unfolds at a holiday party in the Chief Factor's dining room, where young Cecilia Douglas meets a fur trapper whose tales inspire a dream filled with fantastical characters, unexpected adventures, and the landscapes and stories of the Pacific Northwest.
A majestic salmon fights its way upstream. Shipwrecked castaways scramble ashore. Beavers face off against fur trappers. Each scene draws inspiration from the people, places, and history of our region.
Since 2019, Columbia Dance has collaborated with historical experts, local Tribal communities, and Fort Vancouver National Historic Site staff to create a whimsical, family-friendly production rooted in the complex history of this place. Featuring sets by renowned scenic artist Thyra Hartshorn and costumes by international designer Christine Darch, this is a holiday tradition you won't find anywhere else.
