About this Event
This class takes place over 3 days on consecutive Wednesdays.
Collage, also known as Papier Colle, is an exciting medium which combines unrelated elements into a cohesive whole. Making a collage is an adventure, a puzzle, of sorts. Over time artists have used collage as a means of experimentation, or as a prequel to paintings they hope to make, but in the last century collage came into its own.
This class will take a deep dive into the history and process of Collage by:
• Exploring the roots of the many styles of collage,
• Discovering the artists who use it in their work.
• Learning/Refining the process and experimentation of making collage.
• Creating our own papers,
• Mastering the use of the gel press,
• Learning the best products and techniques for smooth adhesion,
• Discovering unexpected sources for collage elements and ephemera,
• Understanding ins and outs of copyright regarding images
• and much more.
Expect to be busy and productive during this class experimenting, creating, processing, thinking, and sharing ideas and materials.
Day 1: Collage Basics, overview of materials, sources of images, Use of Gel Plate, mark-making as a means of creating papers for collage, sources for unexpected elements, Copyright limitations on images. We will make at least three small (under 8”x10”) collages from elements we create and bring.
Day 2: We will explore several Collage artists and their works, discuss composition and styles, and then utilize what we learn as inspirations for a larger collage on Canvas or Board. Manipulation and creation of collage elements continues.
Day 3: We will combine Paint and Collage to fuse these two mediums into one cohesive composition on the surface of your choice.
