Collaborative Mindfulness: Teaming for high reliability and performance

Task

The question of teams — and not leadership — is the hard problem of the psychosocial sciences. This observation is readily inferable from the team cohesion and performance (TCP) studies tasked by NASA to support astronaut selection for long distance space expeditions (LDSEs), including to Mars. LDSEs are high risk systems. They are organizations distinguished by their unforgiving parameters and where the "first error could be the last trial."

Response

Every organization is a system and every system is an information processing system. Collaborative Mindfulness (CM) is a TCP model for high risk systems and organizations generally. It extends upon the high reliability organization (HRO) cognitive architecture, was designed in response to NASA LDSE team requirements, and is applicable across operations and enterprises. Cybernetic, phenomenological, and social-psychological perspectives are employed to optimize interpretability, applicability, and relevance. Concrete operational and management effects are targeted and projected. The model is amplified by the author’s prior experience as a CIA Operations Officer and his current work coaching US Military and Special Forces in the team, leadership, communicative, and high reliability processes requisite to successful intelligence and psychological operations during war.

Teaching Method

Sigetic workshops subscribe to the teaching principles extended upon by the US Army Common Faculty Development - Instructor Course (CFD- IC). The CFD-IC combines the outcomes of the Army Basic Instructor Course (ABIC), the Small Group Instructor Training Course (SGITC), and the Faculty Development Program Phase 1 (FDP1). It is the “gold standard” of adult learning. Its methodology — which includes discovery sessions, knowledge checks, and exercises — enables clients to optimize learning fast. The author obtained his CFD-IC certification in 2019.

Author and presentor

Joaquin Trujillo PhD — Sigetic CEO/CTO — is a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Operations Officer and holds a PhD in Sociology from Florida International University (FIU). He regularly coaches US military and Special Forces in the team, leadership, communicative, and high reliability processes requisite to successful intelligence and psychological operations during war and evaluates their performance against those variables. His scientific work exhibits basic human phenomena — including thinking, intelligence, conscientiousness, common sense, and teams — in advanced technologies and high risk systems. It also discerns the cognitive operations commonly specified for computational simulation (AI).
