The Design, Sculpture and Philosophy of Harry Bertoia

Harry Bertoia (1915-1978), designer and metal worker, left an enormous legacy of sculptures, furniture, drawings and jewelry. Bertoia designed modern chairs for Knoll, crafted over 50 public sculptures, etched hundreds of monotypes and welded thousands of art pieces. He mingled with the greats: Eames, Saarinen, Knoll, I.M. Pei, Yamasaki and so many more. From his daughter, hear how he pushed the wave of post war art into an expansive period of exploration of not only visual, but practical, auditory and tactile art. From delicate jewelry to massive fountains, from an asymmetrical chaise lounge to petite children’s chairs, from detailed graphics to thunderous gongs; this artist took what he infused from nature’s beauty and transformed it into uplifting experiential pieces. Come for inspiration and education!

Celia Bertoia Biography

The youngest daughter of Harry Bertoia, Celia Bertoia steered non-profits and real estate offices in Colorado until she moved to Montana and managed a race-timing company for a decade. Celia founded and now directs the Harry Bertoia Foundation, based in southern Utah. Her passion is to further the legacy of her father. She is a fine art appraiser with ASA (American Society of Appraisers). She is also the author of The Life and Work of Harry Bertoia: The Man, the Artist, the Visionary (Schiffer, 2015). Celia acted as executive producer for the recently released documentary Harry Bertoia: Master of Metal. She lectures and teaches about Bertoia nationwide.
