Coffee Morning at Ireland House – “Half Way Round” with Mark Graham & Ellie O’Byrne
Date: 2 February 2026, Monday
Time: 10am – 11.30am (registration starts at 9.45am)
Venue: Coleman Santry Room
About the speakers:
Ellie O’Byrne and Mark Graham bring their audience on a journey through the highs and lows of their ongoing quest to circumnavigate the globe by bicycle. The pair left the south coast of Ireland on their bicycles on February 1, 2025.
During the past year, they have run from bears in the Carpathian Mountains, carted their winter kit across the scorching deserts of Central Asia, and Ill-advisedly raced typhoons in Vietnam. After 17,000kms and 12 months in the saddle, they have plenty of tales to tell. Their inspirational story highlights the indomitable human spirit, the ever-present kindness of strangers, the value of seizing the day, and the wisdom of always carrying a spare roll of toilet paper.
Ellie O’Byrne is a freelance journalist and features writer whose work has been found in many Irish media outlets. Before taking a career break to cycle the world for two years, she was writing about environment, arts, food sustainability and local government, as well as producing an arts podcast and working in public relations for one of Ireland’s National Cultural Institutions. She has an MA in Journalism and New Media and a diploma in Teaching and Learning. Before a career change to journalism, she founded and managed artisan bakeries and a farmer’s market in her native city of Cork.
When he is not cycling through a desert in Kazakhstan, Mark Graham is a lecturer in the Department of Arts at SETU (South-East Technical University). For 10 years, he performed with the award-winning band King Kong Company. His book A Year of Festivals in Ireland won Travel Book of the Year at the Irish Travel Writers Awards. Mark has previously worked for RTÈ Radio, The Irish Times and Today FM.
