About this Event

Union Coffee | A Coffee, Art & Culture Salon

Coffee is never just coffee.

It is land.
It is labor.
It is memory moving across oceans.
It is power, exchange, ritual, and choice.

Union Coffee invites you to an intimate and thoughtfully curated coffee cupping, tasting, and cultural salon in New York City—where premium Ugandan coffees meet art, dialogue, and a deeper reflection on the global forces that shape what we drink.

Across two days, guests will gather to explore coffee not only as a beverage, but as a cultural medium—one that connects farmers, traders, artists, and communities across continents.

At the center of the gathering is a premium cupping and tasting experience featuring high-elevation Ugandan coffees, carefully sourced and traceable from farm to cup through Union Coffee’s emerging trade network.

Each coffee will be introduced through sensory storytelling—revealing the landscapes, cultivation traditions, and people behind the beans.

But this is more than a tasting.

It is a conversation about how coffee moves through the world—and how that movement can change.

Coffee, Trade & Cultural Exchange

Together we will explore the deeper histories and futures of coffee through discussion and dialogue, including:

• The global history of coffee trade and its social consequences
• What fair trade truly means—beyond certification labels
• The evolving relationship between producers in Africa and consumers in the United States
• How intentional trade models can create greater dignity, agency, and transparency for farmers

Union Coffee was launched with a simple premise: that the global coffee trade can be more balanced, more transparent, and more human—and that New York can play a role in shaping that future.

Art Exhibition | New Works by Iliad Terra

The gathering will also feature an exhibition of new works by New York artist Iliad Terra, whose practice explores the relationship between mind, matter, memory, and global exchange.

Created with materials and conceptual references drawn from coffee culture itself, the works reflect on themes of:

• ritual and consumption
• labor and invisibility
• trade, movement, and memory

In this context, coffee becomes not only a commodity—but a cultural artifact, a symbol of shared histories and global interdependence.

The Cultural Meaning of Coffee

Across civilizations, coffee has been more than a drink.

It has been the center of conversation, rebellion, philosophy, and art.

From Ottoman coffee houses to European salons, from African highlands to New York cafés, coffee has long been a catalyst for ideas and community.

This gathering revisits that tradition—reimagining the coffee salon for our moment.
