About this Event
The Coding Club is designed for students ages 10- 15
Please inquire if your student doesn't fit that age range but you still want them to participate - [email protected]
What happens when you’ve pushed the limits of block-based programming languages like Scratch? It’s time to start using more powerful, professional-grade tools. Give students the opportunity to make games just like the ones they play.
Students in the Coding Club use code to create games. These games range from adventure games based on students’ hobbies and interests, to physics games, and handy utilities. Coding Club participants should have some prior programming experience, such as a basic course at school or Awesome Inc’s Coding Club, and be comfortable typing at least 20 words per minute.
Coding Club Outcomes:
- Go beyond to block-based languages to use text-based programming
- Learn Computer Science fundamentals
- Explore the creative power of programming, start building a portfolio of professional-quality code
- Gain experince with game devlopment using the construct engine
Class size
This course is capped at 20 students.
Class schedule
The Club will start September 3rd and run every Tuesday from 5:00-6:30 pm through Nov 5th. We typically observe any holiday / weather cancellations from FCPS.

Do students need their own computer for this course?
Yes. Each student will need to provide his/her own laptop for the course. Microsoft Windows-based PC's, Apple macOS computers, or Google Chromebooks will work, but iPads will not work for this course. We recommend a laptop made within the past 3-4 years. Computers should be free from viruses/malware.
We will use multiple online based programing tools in this course. New students will need to create accounts with Glitch, and Construct prior to the start of class.
Glitch is 100% free. Construct has a free teir that limits some features. It is not necessary for this course, but students may want to unlock all the features as their games grow in complexity.
Signup for a Glitch account here.

We have a very limited number of rental laptops available for $25/day, which can be reserved online.
