Join the Asheville Literary Society & Social Club for an evening of cocktails, literary conversation, and a little Southern mischief at the charming Zelda Dearest, as we welcome author Christy Scott Cashman to discuss her captivating new novel, What Happened in Beulah.
Set in the shadow of the Great Smoky Mountains in the 1980s, the novel introduces us to fifteen-year-old Barrett Childress Owens, a sharp-witted outsider navigating family dysfunction, teenage angst, and the peculiarities of small-town Southern life. When a mysterious new girl arrives from New York City and subsequently disappears, the secrets of Beulah begin to unravel.
Part coming-of-age story, part mystery, and full of unforgettable Southern characters, What Happened in Beulah explores family, belonging, and the stories we tell ourselves and one another.
Praised by bestselling author Colum McCann as "funny, sharp, and poignant," the novel is as rich in atmosphere as the kudzu-covered mountains in which it unfolds.
Elizabeth Schulte Roth will be in conversation with Christy Scott Cashman, exploring the inspiration behind the novel, its colorful characters, the complicated bonds of family, and why the South remains such fertile ground for storytelling.
