Crab Team and You: How Citizen Science Efforts Support Invasive Species MonitoringElyse Kelsey, WA Sea Grant Crab Team
March 12, 5:30-7pm Ocean5
Presentation: Join us to explore how community science plays a crucial role in the early detection of invasive European green crabs on Washington’s shorelines. Washington Sea Grant and Washington State University Extension's Molt Search is a volunteer-based program which complements WSG Crab Team's monitoring network and broader state-wide green crab management efforts. Learn how this collaborative approach strengthens early detection, enhances ecological resilience, and how you can get involved in protecting our marine ecosystems.
Elyse Kelsey is a second-year graduate student in the School of Marine and Environmental Affairs at the University of Washington and is pursuing a graduate certificate in climate change and public health. She currently works as a student assistant for the Washington Sea Grant Crab Team, supporting their European green crab early detection and long-term ecological monitoring program. After graduation, she hopes to work to address the needs of Washington’s coastal communities on a range of natural hazards and climate issues that pose environmental and human health risks.
For those attending in person, the doors open at 5:30pm and the presentation will begin at 6pm. Please purchase your beverages in the Cocktails & Fishtales event space rather than at the bar so we can reach our drink minimum. If you're planning on dinner, food must be consumed in the restaurant, so plan to eat either ahead of the event or after the presentation.
For those who can't make it in person, we will plan to stream this in person presentation to the Harbor WildWatch Facebook page. To access Facebook Live events, simply search Harbor WildWatch on Facebook at the scheduled time (6pm for the presentation) to find the live feed on our page. The videos will always post in full once the live stream ends, so feel free to catch up with any content you miss by scrolling through our facebook page. These videos will also get posted to youtube at a later date. All times are posted as PST.
If you are not a member, please still come and see what we're all about! This event is free for members and volunteers, and a suggested donation of $20 for non-members. No RSVP is required.
