A sheltered site with woodland and reedbed surrounding former gravel pits. We expect a good range of birds with up to 5,000 wildfowl, including Gadwall, Goldeneye and Goosander. Kingfisher, Lapwing and Oystercatcher resident. Bittern regularly in winter. Great-spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Brambling and Redpoll are often seen close up on feeders from the Woodland Hide.Coach fare £30 (adults). Please book and pay through Malcolm (contact details available on request - or see our pinned post) preferably by 7 February although we will probably be able to accept later bookings.
The coach departs Hitchin: 7.30am. Letchworth: 7.45am. Stevenage: 8.00am.
Admission charge: Suggested donation: £4
Facilities: 6 hides, 4 screens. Visitor centre, toilets.
Note: there’s no cafe or refreshments so bring your own!
Distances and accessibility: Hides and viewing screens are split into 2 groups to the north or south of the visitor centre with the majority less than half a mile away. The furthest is still less than a mile.
There is a total of 5 miles of rolled gravel paths suitable for wheelchairs and electric buggies. Gates are accessible with RADAR keys. Hides have ramped access, but are not suitable for electric buggies. Benches at regular intervals around the reserve.
Two mobility scooters available for hire.
