Mike Sawyer presents: “The Great Hostel Shop Robbery and Other Lies”,Tuesday, January 20, 2026, 7 pm start.
The Show: Another CMC legend, Mike is a pioneer climber in the Canadian Rockies, and was a member of the CMC “Junior Boys Choir” in the late 70s that included the likes of John Lauchlan and Gary Jennings. Mike was a cutting edge climber putting up one of the Bow Valley’s first 5.11 multi-pitch routes, the bold and infamous “Paper Chase” in 1978.
For those of you too young to remember, long before the days of MEC and its current competitors, "The Hostel Shop", owned and operated by CMCer Mike Mortimer, was the first dedicated climbers and hikers gear store in Calgary (arguably competing with Billy Davidson at Premier Sports). This will be an enlightening expose of the Great Hostel Shop Robbery.
Mike has many a tale to tell, and who knows, maybe he will tell a couple of stories that have never been told in public before… See you there!
When and where: Tuesday, January 10, 2026, 7 pm start - at the Ironwood Stage and Grill. Remember that our slide shows typically fill the Ironwood to capacity so come early, grab a beer (or a meal) and get some front row seats.
Cost: Our shows are free, but we do pass the hat to help cover our costs. Please bring some cash.
