Rockies stalwart Andy Genereux began climbing in the spring of 1975, where his first climbing foray was to follow Ben Gadd (father of Will Gadd) up "Ben's Route" on the East End of Yam. Since then he has gone on to establish over a thousand pitches of new rock in the Canadian Rockies and many of the classic lines of the modern era of development on Yam are due to his efforts. Now, as an aging senior, he only does 1 or 2 new routes a week.
Andy helped establish over 40 routes on Yamnuska, has been rescued off it at least twice (that he admits to) - and for his 50th birthday year - did "50 Yam Routes at 50". Of the 400 routes on Moose Mountain, 290 are his.
In 2024, at 64 years of age he put up "No Place for Old Men" - a new 9 pitch sport route on Yamnuska. He has written 5 guidebooks and dozens of magazine articles.
In 2023 he won the "Summit of Excellence" national award from the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival.
In his youth Andy established many desperate routes throughout the Rockies. In When We Were Young, he looks back at those formative years — pushing the limits of Rockies climbing, establishing new lines, and occasionally getting himself into enough trouble to require rescue. Expect stories of bold leads, new routes, and the occasional epic. Learn why K-Country has him on their "frequent rescued" list.
Andy’s show dovetails with recent presentations by Steve DeMaio, Mike Sawyer, and Judy Sterner — climbers whose stories, like Andy’s, reflect the deep connection between the CMC and the climbing history of Yamnuska and throughout the Rockies.
When and where: Tuesday, March 31, 2026, 7 pm start - at the Ironwood Stage and Grill. Remember that our slide shows typically fill the Ironwood to capacity so come early, grab a beer (or a meal) and get some front row seats.
Cost: Our shows are free, but we do pass the hat to help cover our costs. Please bring some cash.
